Why Consult with a Dietitian? Julie’s Case

There are several reasons why someone could ask for a consultation with a dietitian. We very often think about weight loss but there are many other good reasons for a consultation, and this is what we’d like to discuss today by sharing some experiences of our dietitians.

Today I share with you the experience of Julie (fictitious name) who asked for a consult following a recent diagnosis of pre-diabetes. She wanted to adopt healthy eating habits to regain control of her health. She also wanted to create a healthy relationship with all foods and her body.

Julie is a mother of 2 children in her thirties. She has been fighting against her weight for far too long and started dieting at a very young age, which had the impact of slowing down her metabolism, creating a troubled relationship with certain foods, resulting in the loss of her connection to her hunger and satiety signals and making her weight yoyo over the years.  She has already read all the advice and its opposite on the Internet and did not know how to find her bearings amongst all this contradictory information.

She works full time and divides the tasks of the house with her husband but she is the one who cooks. Her days are very busy which is why her breakfast is summed up in: 2 coffees. She eats on the run at lunchtime (a sandwich or a restaurant dish) and arrives at home starving in the evenings. So, while cooking dinner she nibbles on cheese, bread, chips, raw vegetables… She doesn’t eat much at dinner because she’s no longer hungry, but often wants to eat a sweet dessert in the evening: cookies, fruit, yogurt, ice cream…

She would like to exercise but lacks the motivation. She tells herself every day that she should do more exercise, eat better, plan lunches, take time to eat breakfast, avoid cookies in front of the television in the evening…

During our first meeting we were able to discuss her lifestyle and eating habits, her health, her expectations for the consultation, her personal challenges and obstacles that could lower her motivation. Together, we have set concrete goals to help her improve her eating habits over the long term.

Julie has now been supported nutritionally for 3 months, and the small challenges they have set, as well as the SOSCuisine menus that she follows, have allowed her to take care of herself, have more energy, regain the pleasure of eating from all foods, and to gradually reconnect with her hunger and satiety signals. And the whole family appreciates the new recipes!

The follow-up meetings allowed Julie to share with me her difficulties in implementing changes and together we found solutions. As the meetings progressed, we were able to address several themes and de-mystify certain ideas, especially with regard to fats, carbohydrates, the principles of a good snack, and fiber.

Now Julie is much more active. She walks 30 minutes on her lunch break, plays soccer with her son on weekends, and is thinking about signing up for a Zumba® class with her friends.

On weekends, she and her family plan lunches and dinners for the rest of the week. This way, she no longer needs to think every day about what they are going to eat, and she knows that the meals will be balanced.

In the evening, while cooking dinner, she also prepares lunches for the next day which allows her to have full meals and more time for herself in the morning. In addition, she packs good snacks in her lunch box that she eats before returning home from work, which allows her to better control her hunger when she prepares dinner. Friday night remains a family time during which the whole family enjoys food delivered from a restaurant.

No matter what the reasons are that lead you to ask for a consultation, your dietitian will be there to listen to you, motivate you, support you and provide you with the tools adapted to your situation to help you eat well and with pleasure.
