National Acadian Day
Today is National Acadian Day. August 15, the day celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was the date chosen in 1881 at the first National Convention of the Acadians to remember the Acadians who were deported from New Brunswick by the English between 1755 and 1763.
The “Sputnik” vegetable
Even if the name “Kohlrabi” is not familiar to you, you have certainly seen this vegetable at public markets. Its shape is reminiscent of the Sputnik satellite, launched into orbit by the Russians more than 50 years ago.
Saffron: A Golden Spice
The saffron spice comes from the dried stigmas of the “crocus sativus” flower. Extremely fragile, the spice is harvested from these flowers at dawn, before the rays from the sun reach them and alter the quality of the flower. A delicate hand is necessary, in order to remove the red stigmas from the flower.
